Trail Running in the Sierra Nevada Foothills
The Red Hills Ramble is a trail running event located in the Sierra Nevada foothills near Tuolumne, California. Held during the spring, the courses traverse a landscape characterized by rocky terrain and elevation changes. Participants navigate a mix of technical single track trails and wider fire roads throughout the Red Hills area.
The event features three distinct race distances:
- 10K: A route measuring just over six miles that includes both technical sections and fire trails.
- 15K: This course follows the 10K route but includes an additional steep ascent known locally as El Guapo.
- 30K: A long-distance option consisting of two loops of the 15K course.
The environment is known for its exposed trails and high temperatures. Runners encounter rock-strewn paths that require careful footing. At the finish line, the event provides a communal area with food and beverages where participants can gather. The race site is situated on Red Hills Road, offering views of the surrounding foothills from the higher points of the course.
Registration for the event typically opens in December and closes in late March. Each distance has a specific registration fee, with the 30K being the longest and most repetitive option available for those seeking multiple loops of the terrain.
