Rancho Cuyamaca State Park Orienteering
The event takes place at Rancho Cuyamaca State Park near Julian, CA, with varied terrain including oak woodland, pine forest, meadows, and mountain views. The meeting HQ is at 12551 CA-79, Julian CA 92036.
Three traditional orienteering courses are offered. Participants can choose a shorter loop at HQ or more extensive routes that travel mostly off trail. Distances and climb as measured straight line are:
- Beginner: 2 km, 30 m climb
- Intermediate/Advanced: 4 km, 110 m climb, mostly off trail
- Advanced/Expert: 7.4 km, 185 m climb, mostly off trail
There are two start locations: the HQ start and a remote start at Stonewall Mine for the Intermediate and Advanced courses. A shuttle runs continuously between HQ and the remote start with a ride time of about 10 minutes.
Pre registration is required. Entry fees are $20 for adults, $10 for juniors under 21, and free for children 11 and younger. A $5 early bird discount applies through September 19. Registration will close on October 9 or when the 100 participant limit is reached.
Electronic punching is required; rental epunches are available for $5 and controls will be AIR plus enabled. A basic introductory clinic will be provided at check in for those new to navigation. Parking is available inside the state park after payment of the $10 park entrance fee. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
