Orienteering at Cuyamaca Rancho State Park

Cuyamaca Rancho State Park hosts a traditional orienteering event within its 24,000 acres of oak woodlands, pine forests, and meadows. Located in San Diego County near Julian, the park features over 100 miles of trails and landmarks such as Stonewall Peak and historical sites from the Gold Rush era. The terrain includes diverse landscapes and mountain vistas.

Participants navigate through the environment using a map with a scale of 1:7500 and 5m contours. The event offers three distinct courses based on technical difficulty:

  • Beginner
  • Intermediate
  • Advanced

The event uses electronic punching for scoring, and all participants are required to use an electronic punch. These devices are available for rent or purchase. For those unfamiliar with the sport, an introductory clinic is held before the start to teach navigation basics.

The event is limited to 100 participants, and pre-registration is required. There is a time limit of two and a half hours for all courses. Parking is available at the state park for a $10 entrance fee. Headquarters are located at the specified GPS coordinates within the park grounds. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
