Proceeds and donations support the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. Rotary has worked on polio eradication for more than 35 years and reports a 99.9 percent reduction in polio cases since its first vaccination project in the Philippines in 1979. Rotary members have contributed more than $2.1 billion and volunteer hours to protect nearly 3 billion children in 122 countries. Rotary’s advocacy has helped secure more than $10 billion in government contributions. Polio is described as still endemic in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and organizers note that stopping eradication efforts could allow the disease to paralyze many children again within a decade.
