Event Concept

Race The Tram is a unique urban running event where participants compete against Edinburgh's tram system. All runners meet at the Edinburgh Park Central tram station. At 8:00 am, they board a tram that takes them to one of three possible starting locations. The race begins when the tram doors open at the chosen stop. Participants must then run their own chosen route back to the Edinburgh Park Central finish line before the tram arrives.

Race Details

Participants choose from three start points, each with a different distance and time limit to beat the tram:

  • St Andrew Square: Approximately 5.5 miles, with 70 minutes to return.
  • Foot of the Walk: Approximately 7 miles, with 60 minutes to return.
  • Newhaven Terminus: Approximately 7.5 miles, with 50 minutes to return.

There are no road closures for the event. Runners are responsible for their own safety, including crossing roads. The event is not chip-timed; the sole objective is to finish before the tram.

Participant Information

The event is open to all runners. Participants under 17 years old must be accompanied by a responsible adult. All successful participants receive a goodie bag and a race memento. Prizes are awarded for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers from all tram start locations. Entry costs £20, which includes an optional £1 donation to the Spencer Dayman Meningitis Research charity.
