Race the Dead
Race the Dead is a community 5K run hosted by the Lake Run Club out of Kicks Bar and Grill in Towanda, Illinois. The course is a flat out-and-back of 5K (3.1 miles) along the old Route 66 corridor and passes the historic Towanda cemetery. Scenic luminaries line the route. The event is not officially timed, but an illuminated clock will be visible at the finish.
Registration opens in July. There are two entry options: a shirt entry that includes a long sleeve technical shirt with a seasonal image and a no-shirt entry. The shirt option carries a higher fee, and shirt registration closes in mid October; online registration for the no-shirt option remains open through October 30. Both entry options include a $2 Lake Run Club member discount and a coupon for a soft drink or beer at Kicks.
One water stop is located about 0.4 miles from the start/finish and can be used twice; it offers water plus seasonal treats and refreshments. Participants are advised to bring a flashlight for low light conditions. Costumes are optional and may be eligible for a prize. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
