Event Information

The Race for the Grasshopper 5K takes place on January 9, 2027, at Cowpens National Battlefield in Gaffney, South Carolina. The event name refers to a historical race between two American officers for a British cannon called the "Grasshopper" at the close of the Battle of Cowpens in 1781.

Course Details

The 5K course is a single loop on paved roads within the Cowpens Battlefield.

Registration and Logistics

Registration costs $25, with the price increasing after January 31, 2026. There is no race-day sign-up. The organizers state they cannot offer refunds or deferrals; the event may be rescheduled due to winter weather.

Packet pickup is available at two locations and times:

Friday, January 8, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Gotta Run Spartanburg.
Race day, Saturday, January 9, from 7:00 AM to 8:15 AM at the Cowpens Battlefield Office parking lot.

Awards

Awards are given to the top three overall finishers in the open, masters, and grandmasters categories. Age group awards are also presented in 14 standard divisions, ranging from 14 & under to 75 & over. Age group winners receive a Grasshopper 5K journal.
