Montana Marathon

Opportunity Bank of Montana presents the 46th running of the Montana Marathon on September 20, 2026. The event is a point to point road race that finishes at Pioneer Park in Billings, Montana, and includes multiple race options.

  • Marathon : 26.2 Miles
  • Half Marathon : 13.1 Miles
  • 10K
  • 5K
  • Virtual Race

The full marathon is USATF certified and is a Boston qualifying course with a net elevation loss of about 1,000 feet. The marathon start is in Molt and the route follows a gradual downhill into Billings. The half marathon was selected by the Road Runners Club of America as the Montana State Championship Race. The 10K starts at Rimrock West Park and the 5K starts at Rose Park; all in-person finish lines are at Pioneer Park.

Shuttles are provided from the Senior High School parking lot to the start areas for the marathon, half marathon, and 10K. 5K runners must drive to the start and YMCA buses are available after the race to return runners. Packet pick up takes place at Pioneer Park on the Saturday before the race from 12:00 to 5:00 pm; out of town participants who miss that pickup may collect race gear on race day.

Finisher medals are awarded to all participants. Overall and age group awards are given for men and women in the marathon, half marathon, 10K, and 5K. Virtual participants receive a race shirt by mail about one week before the event, have no designated distance, and are not eligible for awards.

For safety, strollers are not permitted on the marathon or half marathon courses and dogs are not permitted on any course. The course is open to traffic with volunteers at most intersections. Portapotties are available at the bus loading area at Senior High School, at each start, at several mile markers including around miles 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 20, 22, 23, 24, and at the finish line.
