Event overview
The Montana Marathon takes place in Billings, Montana on September 20, 2026. The event offers the following races:
- 26.2 miles (Full Marathon)
- 13.1 miles (Half Marathon)
- 10K (6 miles)
- 5K (3 miles) Virtual options are also available; virtual registration opens January 1, 2026, and virtual results can be submitted between September 20 and 25. All races finish at Pioneer Park in Billings.
Course and logistics
The marathon is a point-to-point course that begins on the rolling plains near Molt and descends about 1,000 vertical feet into Billings. The half marathon was selected as the Montana State Championship race by the Road Runners Club of America. The 10K starts at Rimrock West Park and the 5K starts at Rose Park. For race safety, all participants except 5K runners must use the shuttle service; there is no parking at the start areas and shuttles load from the Senior High School parking lot. Portapotties will be available at the start of each race, at the finish, and at multiple locations along the course. The marathon course includes thirteen aid stations at various mile markers. Strollers and dogs are not permitted on the marathon or half marathon courses. The course is open to traffic, volunteers will staff most intersections, and participants are asked to stay on the right side of the road and avoid earbuds for visibility and safety.
Packet pickup and awards
Packet pickup is scheduled at MSU-Billings Lower Gym on May 31, 2025; out-of-town participants who miss that session may pick up race gear at designated race-day locations. Finisher medals and age-group and overall awards are given for all distances. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
