About the race
The Princeton Half Marathon is a timed race and fundraising event held in Princeton, New Jersey, that benefits HiTOPS, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit providing sex education and LGBTQ+ support for young people in New Jersey. The course runs entirely within historic Princeton and passes landmarks including Princeton Battlefield, the Institute for Advanced Study and the home of Einstein, Princeton University, the Princeton Boathouse on Lake Carnegie, Westminster Choir College, Mount Lucas, and Herrontown Woods. Event formats include an in-person half marathon and virtual options, plus a youth run for participants up to 18 years of age. The live race is USATF certified and operates with a field limit of 1,800 runners; participants must not exceed a 13 minute per mile pace.
Finishers receive a commemorative medal, shirt, and bib. Age-group and category awards cover top finishers and include male, female, and nonbinary classifications as well as a top Princeton employee award and five-year age groups from 14 and under through 85+. Fundraising is central to the event. The race is HiTOPS single largest annual fundraiser and has generated nearly $1.1 million net funds since inception.
Fundraising incentives include registration refunds, a $50 Fleet Feet gift card, tiered prize options, and other benefits for teams that meet fundraising thresholds. Sustainability options and practices include an option to plant a tree instead of taking a shirt, pledges to carry personal water, and encouragement to carpool.
