Event Overview
The Portland Pig Backyard Ultra returns for its fifth edition as a Silver Ticket event. In this ultramarathon format, participants must complete a loop of 6,706 meters (4.167 miles) every hour on the hour. The event continues until only one runner remains to complete a final solo lap. Winning this specific event provides automatic qualification for the national team.
Course Details
The route features a mixed terrain consisting of grass, gravel, track, tarmac, and pavement. It is described as relatively flat with no beach sections or water jumps. The course passes several local landmarks, including two stone quarries with carvings, two prisons, the Olympic Rings, a cricket club, and an Olympic sailing venue. Runners also pass a wallaby farm, alpacas, Portland sheep, and high-angle batteries dating back to 1892.
Participation and Regulations
The event is open to runners aged 20 and over on the day of the race, in accordance with UK Athletics Rules. Individuals aged 18 or 19 are permitted to participate but are limited to a maximum distance of 45 km. No outside assistance is allowed for runners during the event, and the use of running or walking poles is prohibited.
Facilities and Logistics
The entry fee includes chip timing, medic cover, and on-site camping for the runner and two crew members. Camping supports motorhomes but not caravans, and all pitches are non-electric. While hot and cold water and toilets are provided on-site, participants must bring their own food and remain self-sufficient.
