Polar Night Marathon Tromsø
The Polar Night Marathon is a winter running event held in Tromsø, Norway. It is recognized as the largest winter race in the country and is a member of the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS). The marathon distance is officially measured and certified.
The event takes place during the polar night period, where participants run in the middle of the day in the characteristic blue arctic light that occurs before the sun returns to the region. The streets are illuminated by candles and lights, and the Aurora Borealis is sometimes visible in the sky during the race. Spectators gather along the route to support the runners.
Participants can choose from four different street races:
- Ishavskraft Marathon (42.2 km)
- Polar Night Half Marathon (21.1 km)
- Mørketidsmila (10 km)
- Mørketidstrimmen (5 km)
The event attracts an international field of participants. Statistics from the 2026 edition showed 2,350 runners representing 75 different nations. Finishers receive a unique medal featuring a design that changes for each edition of the race. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
