Pennine Barrier Ultra 50
The Pennine Barrier Ultra 50 is a 50 mile trail ultramarathon based at Malham in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The route records approximately 2593m of ascent and includes sections of the Pennine Way and the Yorkshire 3 Peaks way-marked trails, passing Malham Cove, the Dry Valley of Watlowes, Malham Tarn, Fountains Fell, Janet’s Foss and the three peaks Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough.
The event is the 10th edition for 2027 and is run under the permit of the Trail Running Association and UK Athletics rules. It awards ITRA and UTMB mountain index points. The field is limited to 750 places and there is an overall cut off time of 18 hours. Entry fees are listed as £139 (unaffiliated) and £129 (affiliated).
Live GPS tracking is used for the event; each competitor carries a race tracker that transmits location data and includes an SOS function. There are five staffed checkpoints offering drinks, electrolyte products and a variety of food, together with medical cover.
Mandatory kit must be carried at all times and includes waterproof coat with sealed seams, a long-sleeved base layer in a dry bag, minimum 1 litre water capacity, fully charged mobile phone in waterproof cover, emergency blanket, headtorch and backup light, whistle, emergency rations of at least 500 calories and the race GPS tracker. No dropbags, pacers or support runners are permitted. Supporter and parking restrictions apply at several checkpoints and at the start/finish venue.
