Pennine Barrier Ultra 50
The Pennine Barrier Ultra 50 is a 50 miles trail ultramarathon based at Malham Showfield in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The course records 2593 m of ascent, has 750 places and an overall event cut off of 18 hours. The event awards ITRA points and UTMB mountain index points and is held under Trail Running Association permit and UK Athletics rules.
The route follows sections of the Pennine Way and the Yorkshire 3 Peaks way marked trails. Key features on the route include Malham Cove, the Dry Valley of Watlowes, Malham Tarn, Fountains Fell, Janet's Foss and the three peaks Pen y Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough. Live online GPS tracking is used during the race.
There are five checkpoints that provide drinks such as cola, Tailwind and water plus sandwiches, salted potatoes, fruit, snacks and options for vegetarian and vegan diets. Medical cover and first responders are present at checkpoints. Dropbags are not permitted and all participants must carry mandatory kit at all times. Mandatory items include a waterproof coat with sealed seams, a base layer, a minimum 1 litre water container, a headtorch plus back up light source, emergency rations of at least 500 calories, a whistle and the supplied GPS tracker. Random kit checks take place at registration, during the race and at the finish.
Supporter and crew access is restricted at some checkpoint locations for safety and parking reasons. Participant parking is provided on the Malham Showfield with limited camping provisions for camper vans only. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
