Pen-y-ghent Fell Race
The Pen-y-ghent fell race is the first event in the Yorkshire Dales Classics series and is scheduled for 6 June 2026. The course is classed as a mountain event in the AM category and covers 12.2 km (about 7.6 miles) with approximately 500 m of ascent.
The route leaves the playing field and heads out of the village towards Settle, turning left after the church and passing the old school before entering open fields via Bracken Bottom Scar. Competitors climb through limestone pastures to the ridge and make a steep scramble through southern crags to the summit of Pen y Ghent. The route is flagged from the top of Pen y Ghent to the finger post. From there the course follows the Pennine Way and the 3 Peaks Path via Whitber Hill to Jackdaw Hill, then returns to Horton and finishes on the playing fields.
There are two official check points at the summit of Pen y Ghent and at Whitber Hill. Marshals are positioned around the course. The race is run under FRA rules and full FRA mandatory kit is required; waterproof whole body cover, hat, gloves, map, compass, whistle and emergency food are among the items listed as mandatory.
Entries are open with a field limit of 350 and a minimum age of 18. Entry fees are listed for FRA and non FRA members and there is provision for limited entry on the day. Parking is available at the playing field for a small charge and alternative parking is provided nearby for a different charge. Refreshments and a cake stall will be available with proceeds to the Cave Rescue Organisation. Toilet facilities are provided on the playing fields.
