Pen-y-ghent Fell Race

The Pen-y-ghent Fell Race is the first race in the Yorkshire Dales Classics series and takes place on 6 June 2026 in Horton in Ribblesdale. The event is an AM category mountain course of 12.2 km (7.6 miles) with approximately 500 m of ascent and has a race limit of 350 runners and a minimum age of 18 years.

The route leaves the playing fields and follows roads and paths through the village to Bracken Bottom before climbing through limestone pastures to a steep scramble onto the summit of Pen-y-Ghent. From the summit runners follow a flagged section to a finger post, then descend along the Pennine Way and the 3 Peaks Path via Whitber Hill and Jackdaw Hill back to Horton and the playing fields. Two official check points are sited at the summit of Pen-y-Ghent and at Whitber Hill. The route is on public rights of way; marshals will be placed around the course.

The race is run under FRA rules. FRA mandatory minimum kit includes waterproof whole body cover with taped seams and hood, hat, gloves, map, compass, whistle and emergency food; checks will be carried out. Organiser information notes that phone and water are strongly recommended and that retired runners must report to race control.

Entries are open via SI Entries with fees listed for FRA members and non-members. Parking is available on the playing field for a small charge with alternative paid parking nearby. Refreshments and a cake stall will be available with proceeds donated to the Cave Rescue Organisation. Prize giving will take place at the Pavilion. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
