Pen-y-Ghent Fell Race
The Pen-y-Ghent Fell Race is a mountain course event held in Yorkshire. It serves as the opening race of the Yorkshire Dales Classics Series. The route covers a distance of 12.2 km (7.6 miles) and involves 500 m (1,640 ft) of total climbing, according to its AM category classification.
The course begins at the Horton in Ribblesdale playing fields. Participants head out of the village toward Settle, passing the church and the old school before entering the open fell via Brackenbottom Scar. The ascent continues through Limekiln Pastures to the summit of Pen-y-Ghent, which serves as the first checkpoint. From the summit, the route descends to a finger post and follows the Three Peaks Path toward Whitber Hill, where the second checkpoint is located. The final section joins the Pennine Way at Jackdaw Hill and returns to the village, finishing back at the playing fields.
The race is conducted under FRA Rules. While the route follows open rights of way and footpaths, it is only specifically flagged between the summit of Pen-y-Ghent and the finger post. On-site facilities include toilets at the playing fields and the National Park car park. Participation is open to individuals aged 18 or older.
