Pain in Moraine - September 11 to 12, 2026
Pain in Moraine is a 24 hour loop challenge held at Moraine State Park South Shore, Sunken Garden Trailhead (coordinates 40.941781, -80.093522). The event is part of the Glacier Ridge Ultramarathons and Trail Race series and returns for a second year with timed scoring of laps. New for 2026, Miles of Smiles will track participants.
The course uses the Pleasant Valley, Hilltop, and Sunken Garden trails. Each loop is an almost perfect 10K (about 6.2 miles) and includes approximately 723 feet of vertical gain. Competitors may arrive at any point during the event to log laps and may leave and return later; runners should communicate intentions to race management.
There is space near the start and finish to set up a base camp. Tents and canopies are permitted and should be properly tethered. Camp fires and alcohol are not allowed. A couple of propane heaters will be available near the main tent overnight.
The main tent will operate a fully stocked aid station with hot food options including toasted cheese, quesadillas, ramen noodles, hot dogs, and pizza. A mini aid station at the halfway point will be stocked with water and Gatorade throughout the event.
Registration closes August 23, 2026; day of event registration is possible if capacity allows and accepts cash or Venmo. Registrations before August 23 will receive a pair of 3 inch wool socks and a Techno Lite Vest. Awards are presented at the conclusion of the challenge to the male and female with the most laps, with tie breakers by last lap time. Additional awards recognize competitors who reach ultra distances based on loop count. Runners under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Refunds or deferments are available for pregnancy or postpartum. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
