Event Format

The Outlast Charlotte is a 6-hour endurance challenge. Participants run a trail-based 5K lap every hour, on the hour. To stay in the event, each lap must be finished within the 60-minute time limit. Finishing a lap early allows for rest before the next round. If a runner misses a lap's cutoff, they are eliminated from continuing. Completing all six laps within the time limits is the goal.

Location and Course

The event is held at Porter Farms Inc in Concord, North Carolina. The course uses trail terrain, which can include dirt, rocks, roots, and elevation changes. Some pavement and gravel may also be present. Aid is available at the basecamp/loop start with water, basic hydration, and snacks. This is a cupless event, so participants must bring their own bottle or hydration system.

Awards and Recognition

All participants receive a premium Outlast t-shirt. Awards are given for completing different numbers of laps:

  • Finishing 4 laps earns a "Grit Earned" patch.
  • Finishing 5 laps earns a "Survivor" patch.
  • Finishing all 6 laps earns a premium Outlast medal.

The top male and female finisher with the fastest combined time for all six 5K laps at this event win a local award. All 6-lap finishers are ranked on a national leaderboard. The fastest runner across all national Outlast events is crowned National Champion and wins $1,000. Event winners also qualify for a separate championship event.

Logistics

Participants are advised to bring trail shoes, a hydration system, layers for weather, and fuel for between laps. They are permitted to set up a personal tent or aid station at the site. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
