Out of the Ashes 5K and Remembrance Walk
Out of the Ashes is an evening event in Charlotte, NC that combines a competitive 5k race, an interactive remembrance walk, and a virtual option. The in-person running route begins and ends at East City Church and winds through the McClintock Woods neighborhood. The course is mostly flat, consists of two loops with the second loop slightly shorter, and avoids major roads. Neighborhood streets will be closed to thru traffic and police officers and a security vehicle will help manage traffic and lead runners.
Along the interactive walk route, markers indicate stages of pregnancy and infant loss; tables with candles and signs provide spaces to honor children and families. The event includes speakers who share experiences with pregnancy loss, early infant loss, and infertility, and it recognises finishers and teams during closing ceremonies.
Participants can collect race packets at East City Church the day before the event during two pickup windows, or on race day beginning in the afternoon. Parking is available at East Mecklenburg High School with directions from parking volunteers; restrooms are available at the church. Awards are given to the top three finishers, male and female, and teams may compete for awards and milestones.
