Out of the Ashes 5K - Evening 5k + Remembrance Walk
Out of the Ashes is an annual event combining a competitive 5k and an interactive Remembrance Walk to provide a public space for families affected by pregnancy loss, infant loss and infertility. The Remembrance Walk includes markers and tables with candles and signs that represent stages of pregnancy and loss, offering places to honor a child or recognize couples pursuing parenthood.
The competitive 5k follows a mostly flat route through the McClintock Woods residential neighborhood and begins and ends at the East City Church parking lot behind the church. The running course is two loops, with the second loop slightly shorter than the first. Police officers assist with neighborhood traffic and a security vehicle leads the runners; way-finding signs and volunteers help direct participants. Awards are given to the top three finishers, male and female, and awards are also presented by age category for the competitive and virtual races.
Logistics include packet pickup the evening before at East City Church and packet pickup at the venue on race day. Parking is available in rows at East Mecklenburg High School near the church and restrooms are accessible inside the church. Registration fee tiers are listed, and a virtual option is available. Remembrance Teams can register to walk together and be eligible for team awards and recognition.
