Otter Rail and River Run
The Otter Rail and River Run is an off-road event taking place in the Otter Valley, starting and finishing at the village playing field in Tipton St John. Organized by the Tipton St John Playing Field Association in conjunction with Sidmouth Running Club, the event features a multi-terrain course that utilizes public footpaths and rights of way.
The event offers two distinct distances:
- 10 km: An undulating off-road route for participants aged 15 and over.
- 1 mile: A fun run approximately one mile in length, open to all ages.
The 10 km course follows the River Otter downstream, passing through Harpford woods and along the former Sidmouth railway line. The path continues through fields toward Fluxton before returning to the village via various tracks. Finishers aged 18 or older receive a bottle of Otter Ale, with both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options available. Custom medals or coasters are offered as optional extras for this distance.
The 1 mile fun run follows an off-road route. Because the course passes through fields where livestock may be present, children under eight must be accompanied by an adult. All finishers in this category receive a custom medal and a jelly snake.
Participants have the option to camp on the playing field over the event weekend for a fee, with pitches available for tents, campervans, and caravans. The event is held under ARC rules. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
