Osprey 10K Run and 5K Run-Walk
The Osprey Race takes place at Smith Mountain Lake State Park in Huddleston, Virginia. This event is organized by the Friends of Smith Mountain Lake State Park, Inc., with proceeds supporting park improvements, environmental education, and wildlife-focused programs. The event features two distances:
- 10K Run (6.19 miles)
- 5K Run-Walk (3.12 miles)
Both courses begin at the Beach Pavilion and utilize paved park roads and trails. The 5K route includes a steady climb past the boat ramp parking area on State Park Road before turning onto Interpretive Trail. It features a water stop at the 1.5-mile turnaround point and finishes with a moderate downhill and a short uphill section through the upper beach parking area. The total elevation gain for this distance is 217 feet.
The 10K course follows the initial 5K path but extends further toward the Discovery Center area. It includes a second water stop and turnaround at the 2.8-mile mark, offering views of the lake. This route also incorporates a segment on Overnight Road, which contains the steepest portion of the course. The 10K has a total elevation gain of 363 feet.
Professional chip timing is used for both races, and participants have access to live results immediately after finishing. Post-race refreshments include recovery drinks, fruit, and energy bars. Every participant receives a moisture-wicking performance shirt, and awards are presented to top overall and age group finishers for men and women.
