One Thousand Schools 5K
One Thousand Schools hosts a community running event in Alexandria, Virginia, with races and activities that support the organization’s educational and residential programs for at-risk and homeless youth in Honduras. The organization has built more than 100 schools and has engaged volunteers from the greater Washington, D.C. area since 2007.
The in-person course for the timed 5K follows the Mt. Vernon Trail, running from Dangerfield Island Park to Oronoco Park and back. A family-oriented Fun Mile takes place before the 5K and includes a race T-shirt for participants; the virtual 5K option allows remote participation and result uploads within three days but does not include a T-shirt. The event features a special guest who is an international ultra-marathon runner and YouTube creator. Participants in the in-person event are entered for a prize drawing for a run-focused trip to Honduras to train with a Honduran Olympian and their run club.
