North Shore Marathon
The North Shore Marathon is a long-standing running event held in New Zealand, with a history dating back to 2007. Originally part of a regional series, it became a standalone event in 2011. The race takes place annually, typically on the first Sunday of September to coincide with the start of spring and Father's Day, though the exact timing is dependent on the tides.
The course is designed to feature the North Shore coastline, including sections along Milford, Takapuna, and Cheltenham Beaches. Participants also complete a circuit around and atop Maungauika/Historic North Head. This part of the route provides views of the Hauraki Gulf, Rangitoto Island, and the Auckland city skyline. The terrain is varied and consists of a mixture of road surfaces, sandy beaches, and grass trails.
The event offers several distances to accommodate different preferences:
- 42.2 km full marathon
- 21.1 km half marathon
- 10.5 km quarter marathon
- 5 km fun run and walk
- 1.6 km kids mile
All finishers receive a medal upon completing their distance. The first 1500 people to register for the main events receive an event t-shirt, while the first 100 registrations for the kids mile are also eligible for a shirt. The event partners with the Life Education North Shore charity and includes special awards such as the Corporate Cup for the largest business team and the Harold Cup for the largest school team.
