North Pole Triathlon 2026
The North Pole Triathlon is an Olympic distance gravel triathlon held within the Chena Lake Recreation Area in Alaska. The event features a combination of swimming, cycling, and running on a variety of surfaces. Participation is open to individuals and relay teams of two or three people, though entry is limited to a maximum of 99 participants.
The competition consists of the following segments:
- 1500 meter open water swim in Chena Lake.
- 20 km (13 miles) bike ride on wide, flat park trails.
- 10 km (6 mile) run on a mix of dirt trails and paved bike paths.
Water temperatures in Chena Lake typically range between 55 and 65 degrees, and the use of a wetsuit is advised for participants. The cycling portion is a gravel-based course; while road bikes are permitted, they are not recommended. Specific equipment restrictions are in place: time trial bikes, recumbents, fixed gear bikes, and aerobars are not allowed.
All transitions take place at the parking lot off Lake Park Road. Participants must be at least 16 years old as of the end of the calendar year to compete. Eligibility also requires a USA Triathlon membership or the purchase of a single-event pass. Packet pickup is conducted in person prior to the race day, where athletes must present a photo ID and proof of membership.
Awards are presented to the top three male and female individual finishers, as well as the top relay team. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
