Overview

The New Moon Ultra is a trail running event held on the MTB trails at Rowallan Park in Mackay, Queensland. The trails are closed for public use and are opened exclusively for this event once a year.

Event Format

Participants run a loop of 6.7 km every hour on the hour, starting at 6:00 PM. The event offers three distances based on the number of laps completed:

  • 6.7 km (1 lap)
  • 40.2 km (6 laps)
  • 80.4 km (12 laps)

For the 6-lap and 12-lap distances, runners must complete each lap within one hour to start the next lap on time. The final start time for the 12-lap distance is 5:00 AM.

Event Details

Check-in and bib collection occurs from 3:00 PM to 5:30 PM. A race briefing is held at 5:40 PM. Award presentations are held at different times for each distance category.

A communal recovery area is provided, and runners can optionally rent a private 3x3 meter gazebo space for their support crew and gear. Parking is available at the park entrance, but cars are not easily accessible from the recovery zone. Toilets are located at the park entrance and are passed on each lap.

Rules and Requirements

All runners must be self-sufficient. Mandatory gear includes a snake bandage and lights for running on the course. Electricity is not available, so power banks are recommended. Runners must report to an event official if they do not finish the race.

Prize money is awarded to the top three male and female finishers in each distance category. The event is part of a larger trail run series, with points accumulating across all series events. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
