Overview

The Nauvoo Marathon takes place in Illinois, offering a point-to-point course that connects historical locations. The route begins at the Hancock County Courthouse in Carthage and concludes at the Willard Richards Inn in Nauvoo. Approximately 150 runners participate in the full marathon distance.

The event features two distinct distances:

  • 26.2 Miles
  • 2 Miles

Course Details

The marathon course travels primarily on paved roads through scenic farmland between Carthage and Nauvoo, with small sections of gravel. The route passes the Carthage Jail and runs adjacent to a 22-mile trail used historically by horse riders. Upon entering Nauvoo, the path follows Main Street where spectators gather to support the participants. Aid stations are positioned approximately every 2 miles along the course, providing support and access to portable toilets.

The shorter distance is a non-timed Fun Run located within Nauvoo. This option is open to both runners and walkers. Traffic on the marathon course resumes in the early afternoon.

Logistics and Festivities

Participants can attend a pre-race pasta party at the Inn at Old Nauvoo the evening before the event. Packet pick-up is held on Friday for all participants; however, there is no race-day packet pick-up for the full marathon. Those finishing the race receive a custom medal. Post-race activities take place on the Willard Richards Inn property, featuring views of the Mississippi River and access to pioneer-style buildings and carriage activities. Net proceeds from the event benefit the Nauvoo Discovery Program. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
