The Narrow Way Race
The Narrow Way is an annual running event held in Cumberland, Maryland, that utilizes the regional trail network. The event offers several distances to accommodate a variety of participants:
- 10K
- 5K
- 1K Fun Run
The courses begin and end at the Canal Place Festival Grounds, a public space located at the meeting point of the C&O Canal Towpath and the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP). The route follows the GAP Trail through a steep valley known as The Narrows. While much of the GAP consists of crushed stone, the section between Cumberland and the trestle bridge west of the Narrows is paved.
Participants may enter as individuals or as part of a team representing schools, workplaces, or churches. Teams require a minimum of three members to receive a team result, which is calculated based on the finishing times of the top three runners. The 1K Fun Run is a non-timed event focused on participation.
The event is organized by the Allegany County FCA to provide scholarship funding for students to attend local and regional camps. Parking is available at Canal Place, under I-68 at Exit 43B, and at the corner of Baltimore Street and Mechanic Street. Several lodging options are located in the immediate vicinity of the start and finish area in downtown Cumberland and nearby La Vale.
