Mynyddoedd Du / Black Mountains Fell Race
This is an annual, grass-roots, non-commercial fell race organised by Mynydd Du in association with the WFRA and running for over 30 years. The course covers 27.4 km / 17 mi with 1586 m / 5203 ft of ascent and is listed under classes AL, NS, ER, LK. The next scheduled edition is Saturday 11 September 2027. Entry is by advance online registration.
The route is entirely within the Black Mountains and uses open access land and public or permissive rights of way. There are five checkpoints (plus start and finish); runners must visit each checkpoint in order and check in with marshals. The course is unmarked, a sweeper follows the last competitor, and cut-offs are enforced at certain checkpoints and at the finish. If a competitor misses a cut-off they must retire and organisers can provide transport back to Race HQ.
Competitors must be over 18 and self-sufficient on the course as no on-course water will be provided; refreshments may be available at Race HQ after the event. Full kit is required: waterproof and windproof top and legs, hat, gloves, compass, whistle, map and kit bag plus suitable clean footwear. Footwear must be clean to reduce the risk of introducing invasive species. There is a compulsory race briefing before the start. Any surplus from the event is donated to local Mountain Rescue. A prize is awarded for the greatest sustainable travel distance to the start. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
