About the race
The Muriwai Marathon event on 11 October 2026 is a community-run trail festival on Muriwai's west coast near Auckland, organised by Predator Free Muriwai (Muriwai Environmental Trust). The event includes multiple course options and a festival atmosphere at the Muriwai Surf Club.
Courses and terrain
- 22 km trail and forestry roads with rolling terrain and coastal views.
- 7 km mixed single track, dune trails, climbs and descents.
- 3 km coastal pathways and wide trails with light elevation.
Event features and logistics
The festival area at the Surf Club includes food trucks, live music, a bar collaboration with Hallertau Brewery (R18+), kids activities, and coffee and breakfast options. Parking is available in designated grass areas behind or in front of the surf club; organisers ask participants to follow parking directions and consider carpooling. Some course segments cross private property and are accessible only on event day. Training on those sections is not permitted.
Safety, aid and rules
Aid stations supply water, electrolytes and a water refill station; local first aiders and course marshals are onsite. Marshals' instructions must be obeyed. The course surface may include sand, tree roots, branches and slippery sections; trail shoes are recommended. Dogs are not permitted on the trails except registered service dogs; well behaved dogs on leads are welcome at the event base. There is a no-refunds policy; an optional XCover insurance is available at entry.
Rewards and community purpose
Every finisher receives a complimentary soft flask and a native plant. The event raises funds to support local conservation and the goal of reintroducing kiwi to the Muriwai area. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
