Event overview

The MTC Aibell is an ultra running event held as Day 14 of the MTC MizMal® fourteen-day end-to-end series. The route covers a total distance of 27.5 miles with 1,699 ft of ascent and 1,545 ft of descent. The event is listed as the 1st edition and the organiser provides bespoke finisher medals and trophies for male and female champions.

Route and logistics

The published start location is Inishowen Gateway Hotel (F93 PPH9) and the finish is Malin Head. Two intermediate checkpoints are given: CP1 at 9.3 miles (R244, Co. Donegal) and CP2 at 18.2 miles (Balleelaghan). Organisers supply each competitor with a tracking device that includes an SOS function and provide GPX and maps to entrants by email four weeks before the race.

Entry, limits and fees

Entries are limited to 20 race places plus an allowance of 20 MizMal® competitors, for a maximum of 40 participants. Entry fees are listed as £90 for the standard entry and £155 for the race package, which includes an embroidered race shirt and a lightweight hi-viz jacket. All payments are non-refundable under the event terms.

Rules, kit and cut-offs

Entrants must be aged 20 years or over on race day. Competitors must carry mandatory kit including a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, route maps, compass or GPS, whistle, mobile phone, basic first aid and emergency food. The race enforces preset cut-offs based on a minimum average speed of 4.0 mph; competitors who fall below this requirement may be withdrawn.
