Event
The Mountain Mist is a trail 50K held at Monte Sano State Park in Huntsville, AL. The 2026 running is the 32nd annual edition. Online registration is limited to 525 entries, closes Jan 17, and the event does not allow refunds, race-day registration, transfers, or deferrals. Race management may deny entry to runners who do not demonstrate an appropriate background in endurance activities.
Course and safety
The course uses rocky mountain single-track trails, with mud and creek crossings, about 4,300' of climb and a final 6-mile section through McKay Hollow. A steep section on the Waterline Trail requires use of the upper body. There are six major aid/check-in stations at:
- O'Shaughnessy Point - 4.3 miles
- Closed Bankhead - 11.4 miles
- Oak Park Ball Fields - 14 miles
- Land Trust - 20 miles
- Trough Springs - 25 miles
- Rest Shelter Hill - 29.5 miles
Total time limit is 9 hours 30 minutes and checkpoint cutoffs are strictly enforced; runners who miss cutoffs may be removed from the course. Medical and evacuation support is provided by HEMSI HART Rescue and Huntsville Cave Rescue Unit. Prohibited items include strollers, baby joggers, skateboards, bicycles, animals, rollerblades, unauthorized vehicles, and unentered runners. Headphones are strongly discouraged.
