Mogollon Monster
The Mogollon Monster is a pair of trail races near Pine, Arizona on the Mogollon Rim. The event includes a long ultramarathon and a separate 42K course that run across forest and rim terrain at moderate to high elevation.
Distances
- 102.3 miles ultramarathon
- 42K (26.7 miles)
The 100 mile course runs along and across the Mogollon Rim with six separate rim climbs, repeated sections on the Rim Road and long stretches on the Highline Trail. Key statistics list total elevation gain of about 15,900 feet and a maximum elevation near 7,912 feet. The route stays generally between roughly 5,200 and 8,000 feet and passes through changing ecosystems from high Sonoran desert to large Ponderosa pine forest.
Aid stations provide water, ice, electrolyte drinks, sweet and salty snacks, fruit, and basic hot and cold items; Skratch Labs supplies chews and hydration mix. Drop bag locations for the 100 mile race include Fish Hatchery, Buck Springs, and Geronimo. The 42K has two staffed aid stations and no drop bags.
Race logistics include limited crew access on the rim, one crew vehicle per runner with a required crew pass, and specific crew-only zones. Pacers and crew access are allowed for the 100 mile race at designated points; the 42K disallows crews and pacers. Entry standards require prior completion of at least a 50 mile race. The 100 mile distance also carries an eight hour volunteer service requirement prior to race day. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
