Rugged Trail Racing on the Mogollon Rim

The Mogollon Monster is a trail running event held near Pine, Arizona, approximately 90 minutes northeast of Phoenix. The course navigates the Mogollon Rim, a geological feature that rises 2,000 feet and stretches across Arizona into New Mexico. Participants experience a transition in ecosystems, moving from the high Sonoran Desert to the largest contiguous Ponderosa Pine forest in the world.

The event features two primary distances:

  • 100 Mile: A point-to-point race with approximately 17,000 to 18,000 feet of elevation gain, reaching a maximum elevation of 8,000 feet.
  • 42K: A distance held on the Sunday of race weekend, featuring approximately 4,554 feet of elevation gain.

The 100 Mile distance is a technical course that includes six separate climbs up the Rim. Due to the difficulty of the terrain, there are specific entry requirements. All entrants for the 100 mile race must have completed at least one 50 mile race or longer prior to race day. Furthermore, there is a service requirement of eight hours of volunteer work, which can be satisfied through trail work or volunteering at other race organizations.

The course utilizes several technical trails, including the Highline Trail, Donahue, and Myrtle Trail. Portions of the route feature steep climbs and descents with grades ranging from 30% to 45%. Runners have access to aid stations, though some locations are designated for crews only without official aid. Shuttles are provided to transport participants from the parking areas to the starting lines. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
