Mogollon Monster - Pine, Arizona
The Mogollon Monster is a weekend trail event on the Mogollon Rim near Pine, Arizona. The program includes a long point-to-point mountain race around the Rim and a separate 42 kilometer trail race that finishes in the town of Pine.
The course runs along and over the Rim, rising from roughly 5,200 feet up to about 8,000 feet and covering many ecosystems from high Sonoran Desert to Ponderosa pine forest. The long distance route includes six separate climbs of the Rim, sustained sections on the Highline Trail, and technical single-track on trails named Donahue, Myrtle, and Promontory. Steep grades of 30 to 45 percent appear on some climbs and descents. The race lists total elevation gain for the long route at about 15,900 feet.
Weather in mid-September can vary widely: warmer conditions below the Rim and much colder conditions on top at night, with leftover monsoon storms possible. Crew access is limited to designated crew zones and some top-of-rim aid stations; the 42 km race does not allow crews or pacers. The long distance race requires prior ultramarathon experience and includes an entrant service requirement of eight hours of volunteer work or an option to donate toward trail organizations. The event also serves as a qualifying race for some western 100 mile events. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
