About the race
The MOCO Trails Wild West Backyard Ultra is a community-driven endurance race held at Loudy Simpson Park in Craig, Colorado on August 15, 2026. The event takes place along the banks of the Yampa River and uses the Backyard Ultra format.
In the Backyard Ultra format runners complete a loop of 4.167 miles each hour, beginning together on the hour and repeating the loop until only one runner remains. Runners must be in the starting corral at the start signal and must complete each loop within the one-hour limit; failure to start a loop or to finish a loop within the hour results in elimination. The final runner must complete one additional loop alone to be declared the winner.
Distances:
- Backyard Ultra loop 4.167 miles per loop
- Citizens Race single loop 4.167 miles
The Citizens Race is a single-loop option along the same course through Loudy Simpson Park, following riverside trail, tree-lined sections, several small bridges, and short paved segments. It accommodates runners, walkers, and community members who prefer one loop rather than the full Backyard format.
The start/finish area and main aid station are located near the park ice arena and serve as runner camp between loops. Support includes food and hydration, a rest area, crew access in designated areas, and basic first aid. Headlamps or handheld lights are required after dark. Medical support will be available, and race directors may remove a runner for safety reasons. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
