MOCO Trails Wild West Backyard Ultra - Craig, Colorado
The MOCO Trails Wild West Backyard Ultra is a community-driven endurance event held at Loudy Simpson Park in Craig, Colorado along the Yampa River. The main event uses the Backyard Ultra format: runners complete a loop and start a new loop every hour until only one runner remains.
Course and format details:
- 4.167 miles per loop (Backyard Ultra format)
- 4.167 miles (Citizens Race single loop)
The trail route is primarily dirt with a small amount of pavement. Runners follow shaded, tree-lined sections, riverside trail along the Yampa, several small bridges, and open park trail sections. The start/finish area and main aid station are located at Loudy Simpson Park near the ice arena, and serve as a runner camp where participants can set up chairs, tents, or personal gear.
Support on course includes water, snacks, basic first aid, and crew access in designated areas. Night running requires personal lighting such as a headlamp. Race rules require runners to be in the starting area when the start signal sounds and to complete each loop within the allotted hour; failure to do so results in elimination. The Citizens Race is a single-loop option for those who want to run or walk the same course without repeating loops. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
