MOCO Trails Wild West Backyard Ultra

The MOCO Trails Wild West Backyard Ultra is an endurance event held at Loudy Simpson Park in Craig, Colorado. The course follows scenic trails along the banks of the Yampa River, featuring a mix of dirt paths and minimal pavement. Participants navigate a route that includes shaded tree-lined sections, riverside views, and several small bridges.

The event offers two distinct formats:

  • Backyard Ultra: Participants run a 4.167 mile loop every hour. To stay in the race, runners must be in the starting corral when the new loop begins and complete the lap within the hour. The event continues until only one runner remains and successfully completes a final solo loop.
  • Citizens Race: A single-loop option covering 4.167 miles for those who wish to experience the course without the multi-loop elimination format.

The start and finish area is located near the ice arena at Loudy Simpson Park. This central hub serves as a runner camp and aid station where participants can set up personal gear, tents, and chairs. Support facilities include access to food, hydration, and a rest area between loops. Runners participating into the night are required to provide their own lighting, such as a headlamp or handheld light. Registration includes a race bib, a custom t-shirt, and access to post-race refreshments. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
