Hayden Cog Run

Event overview

The Hayden Cog Run is part of the Steamboat Springs Running Series and takes place in the town of Hayden, Colorado, about 25 minutes west of Steamboat. The event is held at Hayden Town Park in Routt County.

The race date is Saturday, May 3rd, 2026. Distances offered are an 8.4 mile race, a 5k, and a 1 mile Kids Fun Run. Pets are not advised on the 8.4 mile course and are possible on the 5k.

Registration opens on January 1st, 2026. Online registration closes on Saturday, May 2nd at 6 pm. Packet pickup and in-person registration take place in the park on race day from 9:00 to 9:45 am. There are no refunds, and race proceeds support local non-profit organizations.

The 8.4 mile race is an out-and-back course on Routt County Road 76. It includes about 3 miles of steep uphill and 3 miles of steep downhill, with the turnaround at the top of the Hayden Cog. The course has views of the Yampa Valley.

The 5k is an out-and-back route in the same direction as the longer race. Runners cross a bridge over the river and turn around shortly after the road becomes dirt.

There is one water station on the 8.4 mile course and minimal aid for the 5k. Participants are expected to bring their own container for water.

Fees, awards and extras

Adult entry fees in 2026 are 40 USD for the 8.4 mile and 25 USD for the 5k, with higher prices after early April and on race day. Youth aged 17 and under can enter both races for 15 USD, and the 1 mile Kids Fun Run is free, with donations accepted. In-person registration costs 10 USD more than online registration. A race T-shirt costs 20 USD and is not guaranteed after April 30th.

Awards are given in the park after the race, with prizes for the top three male and female finishers. All participants are included in a prize raffle held after the awards ceremony. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
