Mint Springs Trail 5K++
The Mint Springs Trail 5K++ is a timed mountain-trail race held at Mint Springs Valley Park in Crozet, Virginia. The course measures approximately 3.9 miles and includes about 860 ft of total ascent and descent, making it longer and hillier than a typical road 5K. Runners should expect mostly single-track trails with some double-track, no paved roads, and wet and muddy footing in places.
The route begins with a steep climb up Bucks Elbow Mountain before following the park's upper ridge and progressing onto the Ridge and Sunset trails. Participants pass the "Slab" overlook and travel through areas of mountain laurel before descending back to a finish at the pavilion by the upper lake. Recent trail reroutes and the addition of new trails have altered the course from previous years, so past course times are not directly comparable.
The event is part of the Charlottesville Summer Trail Running Series, a four-race series spanning distances from 5k to 5 miles. The race is timed and bibs are issued at packet pickup. Awards are given to the top three overall male and female finishers and to age-group finishers in the following categories: 12 and under, 13-17, 18-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70+. The venue includes a playground and rocks for children; walkers and hikers are also welcome. Organizers note that registering early improves the chance of obtaining a shirt in the requested size.
