Mines of Spain 100 : Dubuque, IA
The Mines of Spain 100 is a Midwest trail ultramarathon based at Louis Murphy Park and routed primarily through the Mines of Spain Recreation Area near the Mississippi River. The event offers two distances.
- 100 Miler, 5 loops, ~14,000 ft total elevation gain
- 100K, 3 loops, ~8,400 ft total elevation gain
The course is a marked loop of roughly 20 mile that uses dirt, grass and rock trails with a few short paved connector sections. Terrain includes steep technical segments, flat dirt single track, rolling grassy sections, prairie vistas and dense hardwood forest. Runners encounter multiple viewpoints of the Mississippi River and pass around Horseshoe Bluff.
Time limits are stated for each distance: 33 hours for the 100 mile and 23 hours for the 100K. Packet pickup is scheduled on the days before the race and no camping or runner setup is allowed on the Thursday evening before the event.
The race maintains policies for refunds, deferrals and cancellations. Partial refunds and deferrals are available with written requests and confirmation; key deadlines include June 30 for a full deferral or partial refund and August 31 for a 75 percent deferral. Cancellation or course modification for safety or trail conditions may occur with no refund. A public waitlist is used when the race is full and invited participants have limited time to accept open spots.
