Mines of Spain 100 : Dubuque, IA
The event is a trail ultramarathon held in Louis Murphy Park and the Mines of Spain Recreation Area in eastern Iowa. It follows a marked loop of approximately 20 miles that runs on dirt, grass and rock trails with some short pavement connectors. The route passes Horseshoe Bluff, offers views of the Mississippi River valley, and crosses prairies and hardwood forests. Terrain varies from steep and technical to flat single track and rolling grassy sections.
Race formats:
- 100 miles : 5 loops, approximately 14,000 feet total elevation gain.
- 100 kilometers : 3 loops, approximately 8,400 feet total elevation gain.
Time limits are stated as durations: 33 hours for the 100 mile distance and 23 hours for the 100 kilometer distance. Packet pickup and a prerace gathering take place the day before and the morning of the race. Camping or runner setup is not allowed on the Thursday evening prior to the race.
Registration closes October 1 at 11:59 PM CT. The event maintains a public waitlist; waitlist invitations are issued by email and must be accepted within a limited window that shortens four weeks out. Partial refunds and deferrals are available under written request with deadlines and restrictions; bib transfers are not allowed. Race photography by Mile 90 Photography is provided free to runners.
