Mines of Spain 100 - Dubuque, IA
The Mines of Spain 100 presents two trail race distances based out of Louis Murphy Park in Dubuque, Iowa. The event uses the trail network of the Mines of Spain Recreation Area within the Mississippi River valley and features scenic views including Horseshoe Bluff, grass prairies, and hardwood forest.
Distances include:
- 100 Miler
- 100K
Both distances follow a marked, approximately 20 mile loop that is run multiple times. The loop runs mainly on dirt, grass, and rock trails with a few short pavement connectors at the beginning and end of each circuit. Trail surfaces and terrain vary from steep, technical sections to flat single track and rolling grassy segments.
Elevation gain is approximately 2,800 ft per loop, totaling about 14,000 ft for the 100 mile (5 loops) and about 8,400 ft for the 100k (3 loops). The race uses loop cutoffs and overall time limits of 33 hours for the 100 mile and 23 hours for the 100k. Packet pickup and prerace activities take place at Louis Murphy Park on the days before the race.
