Mines of Spain 100, Dubuque, IA
This trail ultrarun uses a marked loop of roughly 20 miles that starts and finishes at Louis Murphy Park and spends most miles within the Mines of Spain Recreation Area. The course runs on an expansive network of dirt, grass and rock trails with a few short paved connectors. Runners encounter views of the Mississippi River, Horseshoe Bluff, grass prairies and dense hardwood forest.
The event offers two distances:
- 100 miles - 5 loops, total elevation gain about 14,000 ft
- 100 kilometers - 3 loops, total elevation gain about 8,400 ft
Elevation gain is approximately 2,800 ft per loop. Trails vary from steep and technical sections to flat single track and rolling grassy stretches. Time limits are specified for each distance (100 miles 33 hours; 100k 23 hours). Packet pickup and a prerace gathering occur the day before the race; no camping or runner setup is allowed that evening.
Registration deadlines, refund and deferral options, waitlist procedures, and distance-switching rules are published in the event policies. Partial refunds and deferrals require written request and confirmation; bib transfers are not allowed. The race may modify the course or cancel for safety or natural disaster, in which case registration fees are not refunded. Professional photography will be available and photos are provided free to runners after the event. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
