Event Overview
The Mines of Spain 100 is a trail race taking place in Dubuque, Iowa. The event offers two distances: a 100-mile race and a 100-kilometer race. Both races start at Louis Murphy Park.
Course Details
The course consists of a loop of approximately 20 miles. Most of the route is within the Mines of Spain Recreation Area, using its network of dirt, grass, and rock trails. The course includes a couple of short paved sections at the beginning and end of each loop to connect different segments.
Runners will pass through varied landscapes, including views of the Mississippi River, Horseshoe Bluff, grass prairies, and hardwood forests. The terrain on the trails ranges from steep and technical to flat single track and rolling grassy sections.
Elevation and Format
Each loop has an elevation gain of approximately 2,800 feet.
- The 100-mile race consists of 5 loops, totaling roughly 14,000 feet of gain.
- The 100-kilometer race consists of 3 loops, totaling roughly 8,400 feet of gain.
Time Limits and Cutoffs
The event has a 33-hour time limit for the 100-mile race, ending at 5:00 PM on Saturday. The 100-kilometer race has a 23-hour time limit, ending at 7:00 AM on Saturday. There are intermediate cutoffs for specific loops during the race.

Packet pickup is available on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning at the start/finish area in Louis Murphy Park. The event is part of the No Coast Trail Series.
