Event overview
The May Madness is a field ultramarathon held near Hoffman, North Carolina on May 23, 2026. The event is a 50K composed of ten consecutive 5K runs held over the course of the day. Participants who complete all ten 5Ks are considered finishers.
Format and course
The event runs one 5K each hour; breaks between laps do not count toward total time. All starts must be with the group each hour; early or late individual starts are not permitted. The loop is wheel-measured at approximately 5K and is an all-natural surface of sand, dirt, leaves and pine straw with minimal shade. There is no water provided on the course. The aid station at the start/finish area will offer water, Gatorade, some snack food and basic first aid supplies.
Logistics, rules and awards
Free camping is available Friday night; tents and campers are allowed but no hookups. Dogs are not allowed on the course; entrants bringing a dog must have another person monitor the dog while the runner is on the course. Organizers advise managing heat and humidity, bringing shade, ice, electrolytes, bug repellent and sunscreen. Trash containers are provided and littering can result in disqualification. The event director may delay or cancel laps for dangerous conditions and may stop, pause or disqualify participants. Registration has limited entries, no refunds, no deferrals and no transfers. Registration fees are $50 by March 31, $60 from April 1 to April 30, and $75 May 1 or later. Register by May 13 to receive a shirt. First overall male and first overall female receive pottery awards; no other finisher awards are planned. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
