Event overview
May Madness 50K is a field-event style 50K held near Hoffman, North Carolina on May 23, 2026. The race consists of ten consecutive 5K laps run over the same measured loop; competitors’ ten lap times are added to produce a 50K total. The event is presented as an all-day, single-day format with extended breaks between laps.
Course and schedule
The course is wheel-measured and approximately 5K per lap. Surfaces are all natural: sand, dirt, leaves, pine straw and similar, with minimal shade and possible occasional horse droppings. There is no water available on the course itself. The event runs one 5K lap each hour; entrants must start with the group each hour and complete all ten laps to be classified as a finisher. Break time between laps does not count toward the finish.
Logistics and rules
An aid station will provide water, Gatorade, some snack items and basic first aid supplies. Free camping is available the night before; tents and campers are allowed but there are no electrical hook-ups. Dogs are not allowed on the course; if a participant brings a dog, another person must monitor it while that participant is running. Race officials may delay or cancel laps for dangerous conditions and may stop, pause, or disqualify entrants at their discretion. Participants are responsible for managing heat, bringing food and shade, and following Leave No Trace and litter rules.
Registration and awards
Registration is limited and nontransferable, with no refunds, deferrals, or wait list. Registrations by May 13 include a shirt; the shirt back is printed with "May Madness" ten times. Overall first place male and female receive pottery awards; there are no other finisher awards. Registration fees vary by date. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
