Matt Mason "Cowboy UP" Triathlon/Duathlon at Smithville Lake
The Matt Mason "Cowboy UP" Triathlon/Duathlon, established in 2012, honors and supports those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country and remembers its namesake. The event is held at Smithville Lake Crow's Creek Park, Shelter 5, in Smithville, Missouri. All proceeds from the event are donated.
Race formats include individual triathlon distances, duathlon distances, relay teams, and a virtual runner option. Key course facts:
- Short Course Triathlon: 500 meter swim, 11 mile bike (2 laps), 5K run
- Long Course Triathlon: 1000 meter swim, 18.8 mile bike (4 laps), 10K run
- Short Course Duathlon: 1.5 mile run, 11 mile bike (2 laps), 5K run
- Relay Team options for short and long courses
- Virtual Runner option includes a T shirt and finisher medal mailed to participants
The swim uses a time trial start with athletes entering the water about every three seconds; the swim course is run clockwise and minute marker signs help athletes line up by expected swim time. The duathlon run uses a shotgun start. Athletes will be body marked in transition. The bike course requires counting laps once off park roads and includes a timing box for accuracy. Short course athletes pass two run water stations, long course athletes pass five. Age group and overall awards are given for men and women in both triathlon and duathlon.
