Mathews Marathon & Half Marathon
Mathews Marathon & Half Marathon is an annual road event in rural Mathews County, Virginia, offering a full marathon, a half marathon, a marathon relay, and virtual options. The courses use dirt, gravel and paved backroads and are described as fast and flat; the full and half courses are USATF certified (Full: VA25016RT, Half: VA25015RT) and accepted as Boston qualifying courses.

The start and finish are located in the town center at Put In Creek Pavilion (for GPS use 117 Brickbat Rd, Mathews 23109). Volunteers are staged approximately every 2.5 to 3 miles with water and gel. The full marathon route passes three county beaches; the half marathon reaches a local beach. Participants receive a custom hoodie sweatshirt and a finisher medal; top finishers and age group awards are recognized.
Registration details for 2026: pre-registration is required, participant limit is 500, registration closes October 10, and fees increase on September 1 (example fees listed for 2026). No refunds are issued one month before the event; registrations can be transferred to the virtual race. Registered participants are invited to a Friday carbo load dinner hosted by the Mathews Family YMCA. Strollers and pets are permitted; Mathews County has no leash law, so loose animals may be encountered. Proceeds support local groups through the Mathews Outdoor Club.
