Mathews Marathon & Half Marathon
This event stages marathon-distance and half-marathon-distance races on rural backroads in Mathews County, Virginia. The organizer describes the course as the "World's Flattest Race Course." Both the full and half courses are USATF certified and listed as Boston qualifier routes.
The event offers these options:
- Full Marathon
- Half Marathon
- Marathon Relay
- Virtual Full or Half Marathon
The course surface includes dirt, gravel, and paved roads and passes local beaches; the marathon route reaches three county beaches while the half reaches one. The start and finish are in Mathews town center at Put In Creek Pavilion (use 117 Brickbat Rd, Mathews 23109 for GPS). Volunteers are staged roughly every 2.5 to 3 miles offering water and gel.
Registration is limited to 500 participants. Early registration fees apply before September 1 and increase afterward; there is no race day registration. Registration closes October 10. Virtual entry is available for a separate fee. No refunds are issued within one month of the event, but registrations may be transferred to the virtual race.
All participants receive a custom hoodie and finisher medal; top finishers and age group placings are recognized. A Friday carbo load dinner and packet pickup are provided by the Mathews Family YMCA. Strollers and pets are permitted; Mathews County does not have a leash law. The event will proceed as scheduled except in case of weather-related disruptions and the schedule may be adjusted.
