Master of the Mountains Adventure Relay - Raton, New Mexico
The Master of the Mountains Adventure Relay is a multi-discipline relay held at Sugarite Canyon State Park near Raton, New Mexico. The event combines trail running, paddling, mountain biking, and a shotgun shooting stage. The course begins with run and paddle segments in New Mexico, then crosses into Southern Colorado for the biking and shooting portions. The final gathering is held at Trinidad State College's Prator Gun Range.
Course segments include:
- Trail run ~6 miles
- Paddling on Lake Maloya ~3 miles
- Biking on rugged dirt roads ~15 miles
- Shotgun shooting course
The event has a history of name changes; it was originally known as Master of the Mountains, was rebranded as Purgatory 4 for some years, and later returned to the original name. A mandatory pre-race meeting takes place the night before at the St. Patrick/St. Joseph Parish Hall where race packets are distributed and course information is reviewed. Parking at the starting area is limited to one support vehicle per participant or team. Weather in the Raton area at this time of year can be variable and light layered clothing is recommended. Event registration categories include individual and team entries with listed fees of USD 125 for individual and USD 85 for team registration.
