MAD Backyard Ultra - January 16, 2027
The MAD Backyard Ultra is the sixth annual backyard ultra held at Camp Jordan Park in East Ridge, TN. It is a qualifying event for The Big Dog's Backyard Ultra. The race consists of repeated loops where each loop must be completed within one hour to continue. The course is a 4.167-mile trail loop that uses the exterior track, gravel, and grass. The organizer describes the course as flat, runnable, and non-technical.
Race rules require all runners to be in the starting corral before the top of the hour and to start each loop at the sounding of the bell. Once on the course, runners may not receive aid from crew or other individuals. Crew access, tents, and canopies are allowed near the start/finish area. No artificial aids including trekking poles are permitted. Race volunteers will provide aid at the start/finish line. Runners continue until one runner completes a final lap and is declared the winner. The event provides 3 minute, 2 minute, and 1 minute warnings for lining up.
Awards and items include a unique award for the last runner standing, participation coins for all runners, and a belt buckle for runners who reach 100 miles. Packet pickup is at 323 Camp Jordan Parkway with times on Friday, January 15 from 5:00 to 6:30 PM and Saturday morning from 6:30 to 7:15 AM. Hotels are available within about a mile and tent and RV camping are allowed; RV spots must be reserved in advance with the race director.
The race is part of the Chattanooga Ultra Championship series. To be eligible for the championship, participants must compete in all three series races, with awards for general participation, for completing at least 50K in each race, and for the top three male, female, and masters runners by accumulated mileage.
