Lungbuster 5K - Mukilteo
The Lungbuster 5K is the ninth annual 5K held in Mukilteo on October 4, 2026. The event raises funds specifically for research into treatments for ROS1 positive lung cancer and is presented by the Lungbuster nonprofit.
Lung cancer is described as the leading cause of cancer related deaths in the United States, with over 230,000 new diagnoses and more than 155,000 deaths per year. The event notes that lung cancer receives relatively little research funding and that some lung cancers are caused by genetic mutations that can be treated with targeted chemotherapy, which can improve survival.
The nonprofit was established in honor of an individual who was diagnosed at age 44 with non small cell lung cancer caused by the ROS1 mutation. ROS1 mutations account for about 1 to 2 percent of lung cancers, which creates a small patient population for research focus.
The Lungbuster organization is entirely volunteer run and reports that event expenses are covered by sponsors so that race fees and donations go directly to the ROS1ders research fund. Since the first race in 2018, Lungbuster has donated $140,000 to lung cancer research. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
