Lungbuster 5k
The Lungbuster 5k is a community road race held in Mukilteo on October 4, 2026. This is the ninth annual running of the event and the distance is 5K.
The event raises funds for research into ROS1 positive lung cancer treatments. It was established in honor of a healthy non-smoker who was diagnosed at age 44 with non small cell lung cancer caused by a ROS1 mutation. ROS1 mutations account for about 1 to 2 percent of lung cancers, a small patient population that can limit research attention.
The organizing group is a nonprofit run entirely by volunteers. Event expenses are covered by sponsors so that race fees and donations go directly to The ROS1ders research fund. Since the first race in 2018, Lungbuster has donated $140,000 to lung cancer research.
The site materials note broader context about lung cancer in the United States: it is the leading cause of cancer related deaths, with more than 230,000 new diagnoses and over 155,000 deaths per year. The materials also state that some lung cancers are driven by genetic mutations and that targeted chemotherapy can improve survival for patients whose tumors have specific mutations.
