Event Overview
The Louisiana Marathon is a multi-race running event held annually in Baton Rouge during Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend. Established in 2012, the event combines a competitive road race with a festival atmosphere that highlights local food, music, and culture. The courses are designed to be fast and flat, taking participants through various scenic areas of the city including the downtown district, the Louisiana State University (LSU) campus, University Lakes, and several historic neighborhoods shaded by oak trees.
Course Details and Distances
The race weekend features several distances to accommodate different experience levels. The marathon course is USAT&F certified and serves as an official Boston Qualifier. Many participants utilize this route for qualifying times due to its level terrain. Spectators gather at various points along the route to provide support. Time limits are enforced for each distance to ensure the safety of all participants.
Available distances include:
- 26.2 Miles (Full Marathon) - 6-hour time limit.
- 13.1 Miles (Half Marathon) - 4-hour time limit.
- 6.55 Miles (Quarter Marathon) - 2 hours and 15 minutes time limit.
- 3.1 Miles (5K) - 2 hours and 15 minutes time limit.
- 1 Mile (Kid's Marathon) - 30-minute time limit.
- 10 Yards (Diaper Dash) - For the youngest participants.
Venue and Atmosphere
The events begin and end in downtown Baton Rouge, with the start and finish lines situated near the state capital building. Following the races, a festival takes place featuring local musicians and Southern cuisine. The event also provides a dedicated Kids Zone for families participating in the shorter youth distances.
