Loud Thunder 50 is a trail running event presented by Sun Trail Running at Loud Thunder Forest Preserve in Illinois City, IL. The start and finish are at the Horse Corral Campground near 19408 Loud Thunder Rd. Coordinates are 41.421726, -90.834335.

The course is built around a roughly 13.3 mile loop with some short two way sections. About 95 percent of the route is trail, mainly dirt single and double track with short stretches of grass and crushed gravel and very little pavement. Approximate elevation gain is 6600 feet for the 50 mile, 4000 feet for the 50k and 1900 feet for the half marathon.
Two fully stocked aid stations are used, with drop bag and crew access. The longest distance between aid stations is under 5 miles. Pacers are allowed only for the 50 mile and only for the final approximately 18 miles. There is space for crews near parked vehicles and a greenspace at the start finish area.
Key policies: runners are scored in the distance they start and may not switch down during the race. Cutoffs are strictly enforced and are 14 hours for the 50 mile, 12 hours for the 50k and 11 hours for the half marathon. Online registration only. No refunds or bib transfers.
