Loud Thunder 50 : Loud Thunder Forest Preserve, Illinois City
Loud Thunder 50 is a trail event held at Loud Thunder Forest Preserve along the Mississippi River near Illinois City, IL. The event offers multiple race distances on a primarily looped course that uses most of the park trails. The start/finish area is at the Horse Corral Campground and camping is available at that campground and others within the park. Online campsite reservations open March 1; a two night minimum applies for online reservations while unreserved sites are first come first serve with a one night minimum.

The core race loop is about 13.3 miles and the course surface is roughly 95% trail, including dirt single and double track, short grass and crushed gravel stretches, and minimal pavement. Estimated elevation gain is approximately 6600 ft for the 50 mile, 4000 ft for the 50K, and 1900 ft for the half marathon. The route includes a variety of climbs and descents and offers views of the Mississippi River and Lake George.
Two fully stocked aid stations support runners, allow drop bags, and permit crew access; the longest distance between aid stations is under 5 miles. Pacers are permitted only for the 50 mile and only for the final approximately 18 miles. The race enforces Leave No Trace, forbids cutting the course, and does not allow dogs on course.
Registration is online only. There are no refunds or bib transfers. Deferral credits are available under specified deadlines and must be confirmed in writing. A waitlist is used if the event reaches capacity. Packet pickup occurs on race morning and unclaimed packets will not be shipped. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
