The Runners Shop Longest Day Ekiden Relay Race
The Runners Shop Longest Day Ekiden Relay Race is a long-distance team event held at Tommy Thompson Park in Toronto. Based on the Japanese Ekiden tradition, the race features a Tasuki sash that runners pass to one another to symbolize teamwork. A decorating station is provided on-site for teams to personalize their sashes.
The course is designed so that each team collectively completes the distance of a marathon. Teams consist of six runners, with the specific distances distributed as follows:
- Two participants run 10 km
- Three participants run 5 km
- One participant runs 7.2 km
In terms of race mechanics, the first 5 km runner from a team to finish tags the 7.2 km runner, who carries the sash as the final finisher for the group. Due to regulations set by the Toronto Regional Conservation Authority, Tommy Thompson Park is a dog-free environment.
The event serves as a fundraiser for Hopes Rise, a charity program focused on running, reading, and leadership for children. Registration is required on a per-team basis, typically initiated by a team captain. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
