Leatherwood Marathons
Leatherwood Marathons take place in the Leatherwood Mountains near Ferguson, NC. The event uses a core 12 mile loop that gains about 3,050 feet of elevation per loop. Trails are steep and technical, with roots, rock, and mud.
Distances offered include:
- 25K, one 12-mile loop, 3,050 ft gain
- 50K, two loops plus an out-and-back, 6,050 ft gain
- 50 Mile, four full loops, 12,200 ft gain
- 100 Mile, eight loops, 24,400 ft gain
- 100K
The route is marked with orange ribbons and yellow arrows. Each loop has three aid stations named Alpha, Wolf Fang, and Omega. Alpha allows crew access, Wolf Fang does not, and Omega is a staffed stop. Aid station supplies include water, Tailwind, soda, candy, bacon, fruit, pickles, salt, and basic first aid.
Finishers receive a handmade pottery medal and event swag. Results are posted on UltraSignup and photos are released about one week after the event. Event rules state no dogs, no strollers, and no unregistered runners. No refunds are offered; deferments may be available by request. For safety, the 100 mile entry requires a pacer at dusk. Accommodation options near the event include Leatherwood Mountains Cabins and Creekside Campground with tent and RV sites, water and power hookups, and shared shower and bathroom facilities.
