LATR Backyard Ultra : Lake Ahquabi, Indianola, IA
LATR Backyard Ultra uses the backyard ultra format on a loop course around Lake Ahquabi. Each lap is 4.167 miles and must be completed within 60 minutes, which totals 100 miles at the 24-lap mark. There is no overall race cap, end time, or set mileage limit.
The course begins and ends at the beach shelter house and follows the Lake Trail counterclockwise. The surface is mostly dirt with some gravel and includes roots, rocks, and uneven sections. Much of the route is shaded by mature trees and offers views of the lake. Runners who continue into overnight hours are required to carry a headlamp; additional but limited lighting will be on the course during darkness.
Race rules require runners to return to the starting corral at the top of each hour to begin the next lap, with short warnings given before the hour. Runners may not leave the course during a lap except to use restrooms, and no pacers or personal aids such as trekking poles are allowed while on the course. Spectators, crew, and eliminated runners are not permitted on the course. Upon completing a lap, participants may receive aid from their crew.
Aid is provided at the starting corral and at a midway aid station, with water, Tailwind, and snacks available. Bathrooms are located along the route and at the beach shelter house.
Crew areas are located in and around the beach shelter; crews may use tents or canopies and must park in adjacent lots, minimize noise, leave pets at home, and remove all trash at departure.
Registration uses three pricing tiers with scheduled increases; a t-shirt add-on is available for an additional fee prior to the September price change. No refunds or transfers are allowed. The winner receives a medal, a prize package, and a bronze coin as part of the event's affiliation. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
