LATR Backyard Ultra : Lake Ahquabi, Indianola, IA (September 26, 2026)
LATR Backyard Ultra is held at Lake Ahquabi State Park with the race base at the beach shelter house. The event uses a looped Lake Trail that runs counterclockwise around Lake Ahquabi. The trail is mostly dirt with some gravel and includes roots, rocks, and uneven surfaces; much of the route passes under mature trees with intermittent lake views.
The race format requires runners to complete a single lap of 4.167 miles every hour. Runners must return to the starting corral at the top of each hour to continue; failure to do so results in disqualification. Laps must be finished within 60 minutes. There is no overall time or distance cap; the winner is the last runner to complete one more lap than anyone else. Other participants receive distance/lap results.
Support and logistics: water, Tailwind, and snacks will be available at the starting corral and at a midway aid station on the loop. Several restrooms are located along the course and at the beach shelter. Runners running after dark must carry a headlamp; additional course lighting will be provided for overnight hours.
Packet pick up is available the day before and on race day at the beach shelter house, and a mandatory pre-race meeting will be held before the start. Crews may set up around the shelter house but must use adjacent parking lots, limit noise, remove trash, and avoid personal aid to runners on the course. Lodging options exist in Indianola and campsites can be reserved through the Iowa DNR.
Registration uses tiered pricing with a t-shirt add-on option for early registrants; there are no refunds or transfers. The event offers a winner prize package including a medal, a $200 Scheels gift card, and a bronze coin through Big's Backyard Ultra affiliation.
