Event Format
The LATR Backyard Ultra uses a specific format. Participants run a loop of 4.167 miles every hour. They must be back at the starting corral within that hour and begin the next loop at the top of the next hour. The race continues until only one runner remains, who is the winner. There is no predetermined end time or distance limit. All other participants receive a result showing the total laps and distance they completed.
Course Details
The loop starts and finishes at the beach shelter house at Lake Ahquabi State Park in Indianola, Iowa. Runners follow the Lake Trail counter-clockwise around the lake. The surface is mostly dirt with some gravel, and includes typical trail features like roots, rocks, and uneven ground. The route goes through mature timber with views of the lake. Runners continuing into the night are required to carry a headlamp. The course will have some added lighting during overnight hours. Water, Tailwind, and snacks are available at the starting corral and at a mid-loop aid station. Restrooms are located at several points along the course and at the beach shelter house.
