Event overview
The 2026 Lake Nighthorse Triathlon - Sprint and Olympic is scheduled for September 12, 2026, at Lake Nighthorse Recreation Area in Durango, Colorado (1795 CR 210). The event offers Individual Sprint and Individual Olympic races plus sprint relay categories: male, female, and coed. The Olympic race is two laps of the Sprint course for all disciplines. The race is USA Triathlon (USAT) sanctioned.
Course, requirements and registration
The swim takes place in the lake and the Sprint swim distance is 750 m (820 yd). Organizers note open water swimming at about 6900 ft elevation is more challenging than pool swimming. Participants are advised to be able to swim the equivalent of 1000 m non-stop in a pool and to complete the 750 m swim in 33 minutes (the Olympic swim allowance is twice that). The bike course includes climbs and the run course is mostly natural dirt and gravel with lake views.
Registration details listed for each event include price, a fee amount, 150 spots remaining per event, and an age minimum of 15. Registration opens January 31, 2026 at 12:00am MST. The event statement emphasizes participant and volunteer safety for the swim. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
