Lake Nighthorse Triathlon
The Lake Nighthorse Triathlon takes place in Durango, Colorado, at an elevation of 6,900 feet. This multisport event is a USAT sanctioned race, offering participants the opportunity for national ranking points and potential qualification for National and World Championships. The competition is held at the Lake Nighthorse Recreation Area.
The triathlon features two primary distances:
- Individual Sprint: A 750 meter open water swim, followed by a bike and run.
- Individual Olympic: Consists of two laps of the Sprint course for all disciplines.
- Sprint Relay: Team options for male, female, and coed groups.
The swim portion is held in Lake Nighthorse. Guidelines state that participants should be proficient in freestyle and capable of swimming 1,000 meters non-stop in a pool. The time limit for the sprint swim is 33 minutes, with double that time allocated for the Olympic distance.
The bike course includes several climbs. The run course takes place on a rolling terrain with a surface consisting primarily of natural dirt and gravel. Participants must be at least 15 years old to enter. The event venue provides views of the lake throughout the various stages of the race.
