Lairig Ghru Race

The Lairig Ghru is a 43 km category C long hill race that traverses a historic drove road through the Cairngorms. The point-to-point route connects the villages of Braemar and Aviemore, reaching an elevation of 835m as it passes between several of the highest mountain peaks in Britain.

The course is unmarked and requires participants to be self-sufficient. There are no regular drink or feed stations provided along the route, though natural water sources are available. Runners must visit two specific checkpoints at Derry Lodge and the Pools of Dee. A strict time limit is enforced at Derry Lodge, where participants must arrive within one hour and 30 minutes to continue. Recording of finish times concludes six and a half hours after the start.

Participants are required to carry specific safety equipment regardless of the weather conditions. This includes a whistle, food, liquid, a compass, and a hat or buff and gloves. Full waterproof jackets and trousers with taped seams are also mandatory. A waterproof paper map is provided to all entrants at registration.

The event is limited to approximately 250 runners. Registration takes place at the Village Hall in Braemar, and the race finishes on Dalfaber Road in Aviemore. Organized bus transport is available for a fee to move participants between the start and finish locations, which must be booked in advance. All race proceeds, after costs, are donated to charitable organizations, specifically the Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
