La Jornada de Las Quebradas 53K

La Jornada de Las Quebradas 53K is a trail ultramarathon near Socorro held on February 13, 2027. The organizer lists the course length as 32 miles and an elevation gain of 3300 feet. Registration fee is $95 and includes a meal from the local food truck Cubish, event photos, and an event shirt. A portion of proceeds supports Socorro High School Cross Country and local trail maintenance. Awards for first place in each category include a $50 REI gift card and a customized trophy.

The course begins with about 7.5 miles of single and double track through arroyos and limestone outcrops, with some short rocky and technical sections, ending at the Byway Aid Station. After a short dirt-road section and a 4WD track, runners reach a marked junction near mile 11 where the loop begins; runners should turn RIGHT to run the loop counterclockwise. The route passes through the Arroyo de la Parida, two yellow gates (runners are advised to duck under the first gate), and an opening in a barbed wire fence to reach a dirt road.

There may be a water only aid station before a runnable five mile stretch with sandstone outcrops leading to Johnson Hill Aid Station at mile 17. A short steep sandy climb leads to an off road vehicle track and a ridge line with basin views. Around mile 21 runners keep right to retrace back to the Byway Aid Station and then run the final 7.5 miles to the start area.

Markings will use ribbons and confidence ribbons and are described as minimal but adequate. Aid stations will offer water and snacks; runners should carry any specific drink mixes or gels they normally use. Cutoffs will be strictly enforced for safety with listed cutoff times at the Byway Aid Station (mile 7.5) 10:30 AM, Johnson Hill Aid Station (mile 17.0) 12:30 PM, and Byway Aid Station (mile 24.5) 3:00 PM.

The race start is at a small pullout off the Quebradas backcountry byway. The access road is generally drivable in most sedans but has some washboard sections. Carpooling is encouraged and a common meeting point is Escondida bridge park just before the Rio Grande crossing. At the start area there will be at least one rented portable toilet and public restrooms are available at Escondida Lake Picnic Area.
