About the race
KINGS Backyard Ultra is a timed loop ultramarathon held at Barge Showgrounds, Whangarei on 5 June 2027. The course is a 6.71 km loop with about 75 m of elevation gain. Surfaces include maintained showground fields, farm paddocks, single trail, gravel road and sealed road, and parts of the route run alongside a creek with native plants and fauna.
Horse showjumping equipment is placed on the course for visual effect. The event follows standard backyard ultra rules: each lap must be completed within one hour, the next lap begins on the hour when a bell sounds, and participants must be in the starting corral at the bell. Runners must not receive personal aid or support while on a lap; the event base is the single location for assistance. No non-competitors are allowed on the course, and animals are not permitted with runners.
The winner is the last person to complete a lap after all others stop; if no runner completes one more lap than others, no winner is declared. Each runner may set up a roughly 4 m x 4 m tent site in the event base; vehicles are not allowed in tent areas. Support crew are limited to two people at a time at the runner support tent.
