Northland 100 course overview
The Northland 100 is an ultramarathon set within Glenbervie Forest, managed by Rayonier Matariki Forests, about 10 km from Whāngarei city centre. The event base and race village are located at the forestry headquarters at the end of Maruata Road. The course runs through pine plantations and native bush and uses forestry roads and tracks.
Distances offered:
- 165 km: 4 full laps, approx. 4,400 m elevation gain
- 105 km: 2 full laps plus a 20 km loop, approx. 2,800 m elevation gain
- 82 km: 2 full laps, approx. 2,450 m elevation gain
- 57 km: 1 full lap plus a 15 km loop, approx. 1,540 m elevation gain
- 15 km: single 15 km loop, approx. 450 m elevation gain
The core circuit is a 41 km figure eight loop. Surface composition is mainly forestry roads with a mix of maintained roads and older unmaintained roads. The route is marked with directional arrows and barrier tape at many road crossings.
Aid stations are positioned on the loop at the Lookout Junction, Marua Road and the event base and provide water, electrolytes and basic food items. There is an overall course cutoff of 32 hours; participants who exceed this will be classified as DNF and will not receive an official result or finisher medal.
Safety measures include compulsory gear checks, visible race bibs for timing and accountability, mandatory headlamps for night running with spare batteries advised, and respect for a working forest where harvesting equipment and other users may be present.
