Kilworth Backyard Ultra
Kilworth Backyard Ultra is a backyard ultra held in Glensheskin Woods, County Cork. The course is a fully marked loop of 6.7 km with about 125 m of climb per loop, using wide forest trail, single track and forest road; there is no tarmac. Marshals will be present at major junctions during the first two loops. Aid is available only at the start and finish area.
The event follows the standard backyard ultra format: runners complete repeated one-hour laps, must finish each lap within the hour to continue, and the race ends when one runner completes one more lap than every other competitor. Once a loop starts, runners may not leave the course or receive assistance while on the loop. Trekking poles and loud speakers are not permitted. Head torches are required for night loops. GPS is allowed.
Mandatory kit is Level C and must be carried as required; items listed include a waterproof jacket with hood and taped seams, full leg waterproof cover, hat or buff, gloves, whistle, charged mobile phone, foil blanket or bivvy, at least 500 mL water carrying means, emergency food, map and compass. Random kit checks may be carried out and failure to carry required items may lead to denial of entry or disqualification.
Parking is limited; stewards will manage parking to maximise space. The starting corral and a nearby grassy area will be available for tents with limited space. Light snacks, drinks, portable toilets and lighting will be provided near the corral. This is the event's second edition. Entry fee is €50; entries open 19 July 2026 and close 11 September 2026. There are 100 places. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
