Event Overview

The Kicks for Kids 5K is an annual community event held at The Ohio State University campus in Columbus, Ohio. Organized by The Running Outreach Initiative and Buckeyes for Public Health, the event serves to support local youth by providing running shoes to student athletes in the Columbus area. The course takes participants around the university's Oval and concludes near the historic Ohio Stadium.

The event offers two distinct distances for participants:

  • 5K chip-timed running race
  • 1 Mile Fun Run and Walk

Participant Experience

The race starts near the university's Bike Hub and the tennis courts. Participants receive a race bib with chip timing for the 5K distance. Registered runners and walkers are provided with a finisher's medal, a race T-shirt, and snacks and refreshments. The event features an appearance by the university mascot, Brutus Buckeye, for photo opportunities and the official start of the races.

Competition and Prizes

The event includes a competitive element with prizes for top finishers. Male and female participants in specific age groups, including 11 and under, 12 to 14, and 15 and up, are eligible for gift cards to local businesses. Additionally, the event includes a raffle system. Each entry includes one raffle ticket, and participants have the option to purchase additional tickets to enter for various prizes. Proceeds from registration fees and raffle sales are directed toward purchasing footwear for youth athletes at several local academies and elementary schools.
